After reading this paper, one should have an idea of what I learned from the simulation and how it works. I will be talking about the challenges my team and I dealt with and how we overcame these challenges. Most importantly, I will be talking about how we made Coffee Connection run as a successful coffee shop. In this paper, I will also discuss my thoughts on teamwork and the significant factors of running a small business. Choosing the used furniture proved to be a good choice that in the long run worked for our coffee shop. We also decided that purchasing the high capacity espresso machine would be very convenient for the business. The machine turned out to be a great investment that served Coffee Connection very well. Challenges We Overcame A challenge that we faced with our coffee shop was making the staffing decisions. We struggled with trying to figure out a sufficient number of managers and servers to hire and an appropriate pay for them. Around the beginning of the simulation, we had a nice amount of servers which resulted in us receiving an award for best staff. After we extended hours, things seemed to go downhill with our staff. As a result, this had an effect on the overall service of the workers. They were not as happy or productive as we had hoped. Our managers were becoming stressed out and our servers were being overworked and even a couple of our servers quit. This lead to us hiring more servers, another manager and giving our managers a raise. These necessary adjustments were a must in our attempt to increase productivity. We also thought that by giving the managers a pay raise, it would make them feel appreciated and motivate them to work. Focusing on the very low gross profit margin ratio of 8%, it can be interpreted that the company has entered in a very competitive market, having low or decrease demand of products among customers. Besides, the 13% of ROCE ratios also shows the weak competitiveness against other fierce competitors. According to Dyson (2007).The ratio of 8% was probably caused by a reduction in the mark-up added the cost of goods sold. The company may have tried to reduce the margins in an attempt to maintain its sales. However, the plan was not highly successful as the turnover didn’t adequately cover the decrease in the mark-up. Even though it is unable to know the information of what kind of business the company operates, the company are not performing effectively over the period. Liquidity Radios Liquidity ratios measure the extent to which assets can be turned into cash quickly. In other words, they try to assess how much cash the entity has available in the short term. It indicates the extent to which all current liabilities are covered by all current assets. If the ratio is greater than 1:1, the entity can meet all of its current liabilities out of current assets. It is incurred because money are being tied up in the company considering a high proportion of stock in the current assets. Similarly, the quick assets ratio shows the firm’s cash position is relatively risky, having insufficient cash to cover its debt and this may result in the inability to make payments for the current liabilities for next period. Presumably,The firm is treated by debtors with consideration and those settlements are done quickly by debtors’ every effort. Importantly, its number is less than the trade creditor period which is 58 days. This refers a sign of company’s good credibility with its creditors(Dyson, 2007). Therefore, the company doesn’t necessarily watch the trade debtor’s position very carefully. Moreover, cash conversion of 7 days is beneficial as it indicate on average 7 days to convert current assets to cash. The efficiency in collecting and paying debt increase the chance that the entity may not run into the problem of cash flow in the near future considering the company’s unhealthy liquidity. Summary Based on the data provided the company apparently earn a small amount of profit due to the strong competition in the particular market. It is clearly exposed to the vulnerable liquidity position, having insufficient liquid resources to meet its current liabilities. There is likely that the firm may not be able to make payment in the next period. However, the core competency in managing its debtors and creditors collection period help reducing the risk of facing cash flow shortfalls. Therefore, to enhance the company’s performance, Davies and Boczko(2005) suggest in order to increase the gross profit apart from increasing selling prices but also lower costs of production, another approach is to deduct the overhead expenses of operating a business such as lower distribution costs and administrative expenses. The Fear of Islam and Muslims Essay A pregnant Muslim Egyptian woman was stabbed to death in a German courtroom in 2009. The twenty-eight year old German man repeatedly stabbed her sixteen times. She bled to death in front of her child and husband (â€Å"Islamophobia† Global n.p.). Islamophobia is a relatively new term that refers to the fear of Islam and Muslims Some sources also include discrimination and hostility towards Muslims in their definition. Therefore, Islamophobia can be defined as the irrational fear of and hostility towards Islam and Muslims (â€Å"Islamaphobia† Opposing n.p). In a U.S.A Today Poll done in 2007, thirty-nine percent of Americans admitted to feeling some sort of prejudice against Muslims. About the same percentage favored Muslims to carry some sort of ID in order to prevent terrorist attacks. About one in four people said that they would not want to have Muslims as their neighbors (Kumar n.p). However, majority of Americans have seemed to developed better attitudes towards Is lam/Muslims. â€Å"According to an ABC News/Washington Post poll in 2010, 37 percent of Americans had favorable opinions of Islam and Muslims† (â€Å"Islamophobia† Opposing n.p). About sixty percent of Americans surveyed admitted that they weren’t that knowledgeable about Islam. â€Å"It seems that the foundation of Islamophobia, for many, may be a simple lack of information† (â€Å"Islamophobia† Global n.p). Islam has nothing to fear. The media plays one of the major roles in fueling this fear. By portraying horrifying scenes from around the world, the media introduces fear into â€Å"large populations, especially in countries where the average household watches television eight hours a day† (Beuhler n.p). The media seems to excel when covering conflict, especially when it comes to the Islamic world, which is filled with conflicts. The film industry has also been blamed for advancing Islamophobia by portraying Muslims and Arabs as the â€Å"bad guys† in Hollywood and Bollywood movies. Such movies influence how Muslims are viewed. The Hollywood film industry has defended itself by stating that they have avoided using Muslims as the villain since 2001. Similary, Bollywood, the Indian film industry, defended itself by claiming that most of their famous actors are Muslim. (â€Å"Islamaphobia† Opposing n.p) Although Islamophobia has been around longer, the term itself was first used in 1997 when the Runnymede Trust published Islamophobia: A Challenge For Us All. The report outlined the common beliefs of all Islamophobes. All of which are entirely false. One of the beliefs of Islamophobes is that Islam is a monolithic religion (Runnymede Trust n.p). They believe that Islam has certain built-in, fixed characteristics that make it violent, anti-democracy etc. and not open to changes. Not only is this idea false, but it also serves as a basis for all other misconceptions. Islam is practiced in numerous countries all over the world. Nearly 1.5 billion people around the world are Muslims. Of these, eighty-five percent are Sunni and fifteen percent are Shiites. Within these two branches are even more different sects. There are several countries whose population is a majority of Muslims. In each of these areas, Islam looks different. As the religion spread, it adopted traditions and customs of the people there. The Sufi Islam practiced in India is very different from the Wahabi Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the belief that is Islam is a monolithic religion is absurd. (Kumar n.p.) â€Å"Like all religions, Islam has adapted† (Kumar n.p). Religious texts may be fixed, yet the thoughts and practices they are made to defend are always changing, based on historical occurrences that are free of religious ideology. Islam isn’t any different compared to other religions. It rose in one situation, amid a trading community in the towns of 7th century Arabia, in the middle of a society organized on a tribal basis. It thrived within the series of great empires. It continues today as the authorized ideology of numerous countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, Sudan etc. (Kumar n.p.) Although a monolithic religion is nothing to fear, the idea that Islam does not incorporate other values has seemed to cause hostility. However, Islam â€Å"is diverse and progressive, with internal differences, debates and development† (The RunnyMede Trust n.p). Alligators and Crocodiles EssaySimilarly, Christianity rose to power through conquest and conversion. It first spread in the Roman world and then in areas such as, Armenia, Arabia, Europe, Eastern Africa and Central Asia. And this is without the Crusade, or the religious wars. These wars were started by European Christians that was motivated somewhat by religious desire to capture Jerusalem, and to gain wealth. In 1099, the first Crusade, the crusaders murdered almost the whole Muslim population of men, women and children. They burned the Jews to death as well as their places of worship. The same type of violence occurred during the Third Crusade when King Richard beheaded thousands. On the other hand, when Saladin, the king of Egypt, retook Jerusalem, violence and revenge against the crusaders were forbidden. Jews were allowed to rebuild their synagogues with state money given to them. The churches were left untouched. The history of Christianity is just as violent as Islamâ€℠¢s. Therefore, the fear of a religion due to its history of war is irrational. After 9/11, the sales of the Quran increased as Americans sought to find an explanation for 9/11. In contrast, when the â€Å" U.S. bombed and destroyed Afghanistan and Iraq, the people of the Middle East didn’t rush off to buy religious texts to look for explanations of U.S. policies† (Kumar n.p).Why? Since there aren’t any cultural or religious explanation for these wars. No religion or culture is responsible for the action of one person or group. Does anyone know Klebold’s, one Columbine shooters, religion? What about Rudolph, the bomber of the Atlanta Olympics in Georgia. What about the bomber, Kaczynski, in Montana. Or what about the manslaughter of the Tech massacre, Cho, in Virginia? Even with all the media coverage, no one probably knows what their religion was. It was not that important. Yet, everyone knows Nidal Hasans religion. Unlike the rest, his religion seems important. It no more explains his horrifying actions than those shooters who relig ion is not know. The only thing it does is support the surviving belief that Islam is violent. Any violent action done by someone identified as Muslim â€Å"becomes the responsibility of the religion and its 1.3 billion followers† (qtd. in Beuler n.p). Islam has nothing to fear. The belief of Islamophobes, whether it’s fueling their fear or hostility, has occurred due to their lack of knowledge. What most people know comes from the media which is not entirely accurate. Their beliefs that Islam is monolithic, sexist, and violent are invalid. Although a monolithic, sexist religion should cause fear, it could cause hostility. And perhaps move forward to a higher level. I feel nowadays, many university students tend to quit school; they are full of debts without jobs, they thought maybe they are wasting their time. I know this because I have an older brother who is attending Sacramento State, who is having to take out loans, accepting the fact, he may be in debt for some time. Yet he strides to work his very best, in school movativing me todo the same as well. I think, going to college is a halting place to go through before university; and it is a smarter way of thinking to do so. A short summarize of the content wi ll show how college is a matter. First, community college gives a chance to everyone who wants to follow their dreams to do so. In addition, the door is open to everybody without any social range or economic, a low-income person will be welcome in college. As an example, I intend to be a correctional officer, yet I chose college to study the first levels, have a degree, find a job and later seek admission to the university. I strongly agree with the state that Liz borrows from Thomas Jefferson, â€Å" Everybody should have an education proportional to their life†. How to Prevent a Shark Attack Even though youre more likely to die from a lightning strike, alligator attack or on a bicycle than from a shark attack, sharks do sometimes bite humans. In this article, you can learn about the actual risk of a shark attack, and how to avoid one.​ The International Shark Attack File The International Shark Attack  File  was developed in the late 1950s to compile information on shark attacks. Sharks attacks may be provoked or unprovoked. According to the International Shark Attack File, provoked attacks are those that happen when a person initiates contact with a shark (e.g., bites occurring to a fisherman removing a shark from a hook, a bite to a diver that has touched a shark). Unprovoked attacks are those that occur in the sharks natural habitat when a human has not initiated contact. Some of these may be if the shark mistakes a human for prey. Over the years, records of unprovoked attacks have increased - in 2015, there were 98 unprovoked shark attacks (6 fatal), which is the highest on record. This doesnt mean sharks are attacking more often. It  is more a function of increased human population and activity in the water (visiting the beach, increase in participation in scuba, paddle boarding, surfing activities, etc.), and the ease of reporting shark bites. Given the large increase in human population and ocean use over the years, the rate of shark attacks is decreasing. The top 3 attacking shark species were the white, tiger and bull sharks. Where Do Shark Attacks Occur? Just because youre swimming in the ocean doesnt mean you may be attacked by a shark. In many areas, large sharks dont come close to shore. The regions with the highest percentage of shark attacks were Florida, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Hawaii, and California. These are also regions where lots of people visit the beaches and participate in water activities. According to  The Shark Handbook, most shark bites occur to swimmers, followed by surfers and divers, but the majority of these bites are minor flesh wounds or abrasions. Ways to Prevent Shark Attacks There are many ways (most of them common-sense) that you can avoid a shark attack. Below is a list of what not to do if youll be swimming in waters where sharks might be present, and techniques for getting away alive if a shark attack really does happen. How to Avoid a Shark Attack: Dont swim alone.Dont swim during dark or twilight hours.Dont swim with shiny jewelry.Dont swim if you have an open wound.Dont swim too far offshore.Ladies: dont swim if youre menstruating.Dont splash excessively or make erratic movements.Keep pets out of the water.Dont swim in areas where there are sewage (for other obvious reasons!) or pinnipeds that are hauled-out. Both areas can attract sharks.Dont swim in areas being used by fishermen, as their bait could attract sharks.Dont push your luck - never harass a shark. Get out of the water if one is spotted and never attempt to grab or touch it. What to Do If Youre Attacked: Lets hope youve followed safety advice and successfully avoided an attack. But what do you do if you suspect a sharks in the area or you are being attacked? If you feel something brush against you, get out of the water.
